President William Ruto has sparked reactions among Kenyans after stating that the cost of paraffin used by boda boda riders will not change despite the fuel hikes. President William Ruto says boda boda riders use paraffin to fuel their bikes.
He made the announcement while addressing the residents of Suneka on Wednesday, April 15, just hours after EPRA announced the new prices. Notably, motorbikes run on petrol and not paraffin or kerosene.
The president stated that VAT would be reduced from 16% to 8% for the next three months, adding that the government has stepped in with KSh 6.5 billion to reduce the cost of fuel.
"The cost of fuel has gone up globally. As a country, we still have enough fuel. We have allocated KSh 6.5 billion to reduce the cost of fuel and reduced VAT to 8% from 16% to 8%. We will also ensure that the cost of paraffin, used by ordinary Kenyans, including the boda boda riders and SACCOs, will remain unchanged. We must cushion our citizens from rising costs of fuel," he announced.

The president made the fictitious statements after the United Alternative Government leaders released a statement linking him, Energy CS Oburu Oginga, ODM leader Oburu Oginga, and Public Service PS Felix Koskei to the 'greatest fuel scandal in the country.' The leaders, led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, demanded Ruto reduce certain VATs and convene a special parliament sitting within seven days to address the challenges they mentioned. The opposition leaders stated that they would stage protests over the rising cost of fuel. However, this threat did not frighten Ruto.
"There are people saying they will protest the high cost of fuel. Will demonstrations help reduce fuel prices? We must use our brains to ensure the costs reduce," Ruto responded
