Police Arrest 4 Students For Burning Dorm At St. Pauls Githakwa Girls, Nyeri

Story by Sammie Mugane

Police have arrested four (4) students who allegedly set alight a dorm at St. Pauls Githakwa Girls High School in Tetu, Nyeri County.
Three form 3 students and one in form four are said to have burnt down Sister Irene Nyaatha Dormitory after altercations over skirts  and blouses theft in the  school.
The girls are said to have connived and set the dorm ablaze and the inferno razed down  45 beds, beddings, boxes containing personal belongings and books, and other valuables.
Neighbours and locals areived at the scene and helped to put off the fire before spreading to other structures.
Fortunately all 43 form 3 girls and grade 10 learners survived the chilling incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed the fire was first spotted by a form 3  student who was returning  to bed after answering a call of nature.
Further investigations also unravel that the school burning plan was hatched during an interschool rally on Sunday May 26.
Further probing one of the arrested students was found with a container  believed to jave ferried the inflammable substance used in the inferno while others were found with matchsticks.
This comes barely days in the wake of the deadly school fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil where 16 girls lost their lives, scores seriously injured and property worth millions of shillings destroyed.
In the same day students of Gacharage Girls High School in Murang'a also set ablaze their dorm. This raises alot of concern why only girls in this era are leading in school arsons unlike previous years when it was a norm for boys schools to dorminate in this vice.
It is alleged examinophobia (anxiety or fear associated with exams) is the major cause of the fires as students pelt their anger on mere issues and loath for the papers especially mock exams.
School heads and administrators are urged to be vigilant so as to curb and counter such incidences before they are planned and when they occur.
