How To Secure Toyota Harrier New Model Grille From Vandalism

Following spate of Toyota Harrier grille thefts in the country especially in Nairobi, motorists are now left to look for alternatives to secure the highly priced car spare part.

The new 2020-2024 Totota Harrier model grills are in high demand and cost between Ksh 80,000 and Kshs  120,000 to replace, making them a "mobile gold" for thieves who can easily resell them on the black market.

However new grilles are said to cost between Kshs 100,000 to 150,000.

Recently a dashcam footage captured daring thugs vandalizing a front grille from a mid-size crossover Toyota Harrier SUV in broad daylight along Parklands road.

Securing a Toyota Harrier grille (specifically the 2020–2024 MXUA80 models) in high-risk areas like Nairobi requires proactive modifications that make quick, "traffic-jam" removal impossible. As of May 2026, thieves are using rapid, seconds-long techniques, making it essential to move beyond standard security.

Here are the best methods to protect your Harrier grille, ranked by effectiveness:

1. Mechanical Reinforcement (Recommended): These methods make it impossible for thieves to remove the grille in under 30 seconds, forcing them to give up.

• Hidden Rivets: Drill small holes from the inside and install aluminium or pop rivets, secured with large backing washers.

• Stainless Steel Tethers: Attach a stainless steel cable (wire mesh) behind the front grill, securing it firmly to the car's crash bar (bumper structure).

• Security Torx Screws: Replace standard screws with specialized anti-theft screws, such as • Pin Torx or tamper-proof, high-grade screws, particularly on top and side mounts.

• Metal Backing Brackets: Fabricate and bolt a flat steel strip/backing bracket behind the bumper to securely hold the grille from behind, making it impossible to pull off.

• Industrial Adhesive/Bonding: Apply 3M panel bond or polyurethane adhesive on the back of the emblem panel and chrome trim to prevent the quick removal of components.

• Ulltimate Protection Combination: For maximum protection, combine hidden rivets, stainless steel tethers, and security Torx screws.

2. High-Tech Security Shock/Vibration Alarms: Install a secondary, sensitive shock-vibration alarm system behind the grill. Any attempt to pull or vibrate the grill will trigger the alarm.

• Hidden GPS Tracker: Install a tracking tag or tracker inside the grill structure, so if stolen, the item can be tracked.

3. Practical Daily Security Remove It When Parked:

Some owners have resorted to removing their grilles and taking them indoors while parked at home to avoid theft in residential parking lots.

The idea though looks funny and ridiculous but may save your grille. πŸ€£

4. Aftermarket Bumper Modification: Consider modifying the bumper to a style that does not have the easily removable OEM grille.

5. Avoid Known Hotspots: Be cautious in high-traffic, slow-moving areas like Parklands Road in Nairobi.
