• Kenyan Government scraps school categories. This means no more national, extra county, county and sub-county schools categories.
All schools will be under one level: Senior High Schools.
• Senior secondary fees for year 2026 set at Ksh.53,554
Kenya has officially scrapped and phased off the national, county, and sub-county school classification system, with the changes taking effect in January 2026.
The new system will categorize secondary schools into clusters based on their ability to offer specific career pathways, moving away from the old location-based system.
For years since the inception of 8-4-4- system Kenya categorized its secondary schools into four tiers: National (C1), Extra County (C2), County (C3), and Sub-county (C4), with National schools being the most prestigious and often having higher costs, while Sub-county schools are typically day schools with varying quality.
