3 Dead, 1 Injured In A Road Accident Along Gatugura-Kimunye Road, Kirinyaga

Story by Sammie Mugane

• 3 students perish in a grisly road accident, 1 critically injured

• 2 were students from a secondary school around, 2 from same primary school and all from the same village

• They motorbike collided with an oncoming speeding lorry

3 boys perished and 1 was critically injured in a ghastly road accident involving a motorbike they were riding on and a lorry near Gatugura market along Kutus-Kimunye road in the dusk of Sunday evening (yesterday).

All the boys are from Kairegi village.

2 were students from a secondary school (form 1 and 2) while 2 from same primary school (grades 2 and 9).

The 3 died on the spot while the critically injured was rushed to hospital.

The victims were on their way to Kimunye from Gatugura when an oncoming speeding lorry from Kimunye crashed them to death.

It is suspected the lorry driver may have not been sober enough as he swerved to the opposite side of the road where he crashed them.

The motorbike rider and 2 pillion passengers died on the spot while another was critically injured and taken to hospital.

Distraught locals who milled at the scene of the grisly accident called on the authority to ensure they erect speed bumps on the road to curb accidents in the area.

They also pleaded with the government to install street lights to ensure visibility on the accidents prone area.

Young men alike are warned against doing  'road trips' while on motorbikes as has become a norm in most areas especially on weekends when they rave on the roads precariously.

Most of them are inexperienced in riding motorbikes and barely wear safety gears while riding. Others overload the capacity a bike is supposed to carry.

In Kenya a motorbike is supposed to ferry one pillion passenger only and the rider.

Caution on the roads is also another issue to observe to avert from more accidents.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to morgue and the lorry towed by police as they launch investigations on the matter.
